Teaching in Japan as part of the JET Program or as an English teacher can be a rewarding experience, but it also comes with unique challenges.
Common challenges that I hear are things like:
- "I'm starting to wonder if I made the right choice coming here. I thought it would be different."
- "I want friends, but really scared to put myself out there. I always find myself back at my apartment alone."
- "I thought this experience would give me clarity about myself and my future, but I'm feeling really lost now."
- "I came to Japan to escape the stressors at home, but it feels like it's followed me here somehow."
- "It's hard to stay motivated when I don't feel valued at work. Sometimes it feels like I'm just an outsider here, not a real teacher."
- "I feel like I'm missing out on important milestones back home. My friends are getting married and having kids, and I'm thousands of miles away."
Getting Support That Fits Your Life in Japan
I understand that JET teachers and English teachers lead busy lives. I also recognize the challenge of finding not only English-speaking support in Japan but also the support of someone who understands your culture and the unique challenges of living abroad. To make that support available to you, I offer online therapy and counseling sessions in Japan.
I've been living in Japan on and off since 2009. I'm also a California Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. I'm based in Okinawa and offer afternoon and evening availability online by appointment.
I specialize in anxiety, panic attacks, chronic worry, health anxiety, social anxiety, and OCD. I am also familiar with a variety of other life issues and concerns. I offer a 15-30-minute consultation at no cost to help you determine if I might be a good fit for you and the topics you want to address. If I'm unfamiliar with working with your concerns, I'll let you know, and I'm happy to help connect you with someone who can help.
Please note: I am not affiliated with the JET Program or any other English teaching company in Japan. The services I provide are independent and offered solely to support individuals' therapy services during their time in Japan.
